England wins rain-washed clash as Aussies’ hope dashed

BIRMINGHAM:Australia was knocked out of Champions Trophy 2017 as England was declared winner through D/L method in final group A match. Bangladesh now qualifies for semi-finals along with England.

Australia was batting first in their must-win Champions Trophy clash against England having lost the toss at Edgbaston. Both teams entered the final Group A fixture unchanged from their last starts in a game that Australia simply must win to advance to the semi-finals.

Australia scored a seemingly respectable 277 runs total in 50 overs for 9 wickets. English team followed through easily until the rain stopped the play in 40th over with England standing at 240/4. After waiting for 30 mins for rain to stop, match was abandoned and England was declared winner by 40 runs through Duck-worth Lewis method.

Earlier in a significant upset of the series, Bangladesh beat New Zealand by 5 wickets and kept their hope alive of reaching semi-finals.
