GUJRANWALA: The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) on Friday rounded up three suspected terrorists in Gujranwala, a CTD spokesman said, seizing a sizeable quantity of arms and explosives from them.
The suspects were apprehended from a park on GT Road following a tip-off, the spokesman said.
“They were planning to target sensitive installations in the city,” he added.
The suspects, Yousuf Tariq, Samiullah and Mansoor, were affiliated with an outlawed group. They were trained in Afghanistan to carry out terrorist attacks.
A case has been lodged against the suspects and they are being further interrogated.
At least 45 people are feared dead and many others injured as two explosions were reported in Kurram Agency’s Parachinar area on Friday, According to media reports.
The explosions were reported to have occurred near a densely populated area that also houses markets.
The explosions reportedly hit a bus stop, and people travelling out of the city ahead of Eidul Fitr were said to have been most affected by the twin bombings.
Rescue operations are underway. An emergency has been imposed in the hospitals in the area, and the injured are being taken to the District General Hospital, Parachinar.
Parachinar with a population of more than 50,000 has been under strict security arrangements for quite some time. Personnel of army and paramilitary Levies have set up checkpoints on all routes leading to the town and visitors and vehicles go through extensive search and identification process.
