Why are India and USA opposing CPEC

Hassan Ahmad
CPEC seems to be a bane for Pakistan’s erstwhile rival India and strategic partner USA. When magnum project of CPEC was inaugurated by PM Nawaz Sharif in Gwadar, several concealed conspiracies started to harm this project. Gwadar is becoming an economic hub of Pakistan after the gradual completion of CPEC. Economy is the major pillar, on which a state can be stand. Unfortunately, from last few decades, Pakistan’s economy was deteriorated due to security issues in country. But when security measures were enhanced in country, Government of Pakistan and China took a decisive measure to bring the economic revolution in this region by laying the foundations of this milestone project known as CPEC.
When implementation of this project was started, India, USA and several other countries colluded to distract this economic project. China has started its trade through this route which is annoying the India and US. If CPEC is successfully completed. It is hoped that Pakistan will stand in the list of top economic successful countries. If take a glance at strategic aspects, it would be cleared that China can control entire world through the routes of Pakistan which is a grave concern for India and USA. China is near about to become the best economy of world by competing USA. CPEC has its immense strategic importance, the Central Asia. Gulf countries, Africa, Europe and circa entire world can be managed from Pakistan. The influence of USA in this region is diminishing by escalating role of China in South Asia. Pakistan has also great benefits from CPEC. Pakistan’s economy is grooming, foreign companies are investing in Pakistan’s stock markets, which is a good news for Pakistan’s economy.
India and USA are deeply concerned about the influence of China in Pakistan because they have realized that duo of China and Pak will put them on brim of darker side. Therefore, these countries have planned their miscreant’s activities to destabilize Pakistan’s security.
Recently, United Nations has issued a report regarding China Pakistan economic corridor that how this gross project will increase further tensions between Pakistan and India. CPEC might create geopolitical tensions with India and ignite political instability. CPEC holds the promise of closer trade, investment and energy cooperation between the two countries, as it creates alternative maritime trade routes for China and its trading partners. According to the report, CPEC could serve as the “driver for trade and economic integration” between China, Pakistan, Iran, India, Afghanistan and the Central Asian states.
Recently, India did not send an official delegation to attend the “Belt and Road Forum” (OBOR) in Beijing after the Chinese Ambassador to India Luo Zhaohui called on India to join. Instead, India criticized China’s global initiative, warning of an “unsustainable debt burden” for countries involved.
India is incensed that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, one of the key Belt and Road projects passes through Kashmir and Pakistan. Indian Foreign Ministry has categorically said that “No country can accept a project that ignores its core concerns on sovereignty and territorial integrity”. He also warned of the danger of debt. One of the criticisms of the Silk Road plan is that host countries may struggle to pay back loans for huge infrastructure projects being carried out and funded by Chinese companies and banks. According to Indian experts, proposed stationing of Chinese nuclear submarines in Gwadar will be a bigger headache for India than the CPEC. Gwadar is located close to the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which more than 1/3rd of the World’s petroleum exports passes. Even India gets almost all of its petroleum from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iran through this piece of waterway. In the event of a flare up, Gwadar based Chinese submarines can launch attacks on oil tankers carrying petroleum to India.
CPEC is a horror dream for India and USA because the dream of USA to establish its reign over this region is going to be foiled. USA has also its reservations regarding CPEC, because China and USA are the economic rivals. USA cannot afford that China do its all trade through central Asia. In fact, USA cannot tolerate the supremacy of Pak and China in this region. Therefore, it has also its doubts with respect to CPEC.
On the other hand, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has insisted that the CPEC and OBOR initiatives are all about shared prosperity, beginning a new era for humanity and progress in poor regions. He has always said that, “Work has already begun across Asia and Africa on infrastructure, industrial cooperation and new platforms of technology. Financial flows have found their way to some of the least developed parts of the world. These outcomes are knitting nations and regions into economic networks and inclusive neighborhoods that transcend borders”.
On the slighter note, Pakistan and China should take proper measures for successfully completion of this project because this will stand Pakistan in the list of rising countries.
