Dental hygiene can save You from various gum diseases

ISLAMABAD(APP): Dental Expert on Friday suggested that taking care of your teeth and gums will not only help keep oral hygiene or make you smile better, but also save you from mouth cancer and various gum
Head of Dental Department Senior Dentist Dr Mariya Hashmani talking to private news channel said most of the time, bad dental practices are associated with mouth ulcers, toothache, cavities and bad breath.
However, in reality it can be a prime factor contributing in developing oral cancer too.’Oral cancer is the cancer of the mouth that affects either the lining of the mouth or corrodes the deeper tissues like bones, muscles and nerves in the mouth area’.
‘Although oral cancers are preventable but, unfortunately, there are more people dying from this disease due to improper guidance and negligence,’ says Dr.
She said in a general scenario, cancer of the mouth is more prevalent in people over 50 years of age but in some cases it can also be diagnosed in young adults too.
Dentist says that the most important part of tooth care happens at home. Brushing and flossing properly, along with regular dental checkups, can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
She advised that the minimum time you should spend brushing your teeth is 2 minutes twice a day. When you eat sugary foods or drink sodas frequently throughout the day, the enamel that protects your teeth is constantly exposed to acids.
Hard candies, cough drops, and breath mints that contain sugar are especially harmful because they dissolve slowly in your mouth but expert suggest that you take a 3-hour break between eating foods containing sugar.
Some common factors that increase one’s risk of oral cancer are smoking, chewing tobacco, consumption of alcohol, extreme sun exposure of the lips, consuming beetlenut, etc, she added.
Dentist said not brushing the teeth increases the bacterial count in the mouth which can travel to the damaged heart valves to cause infection as 60% citizens not brush their teeth regularly.
